UN- identified Soldiers have attacked protesters forcing them to vacate the gas plant Obi/Obi belonging to the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) at Obosi community in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The Protesters from Obosi and other communities in Omoku have been occupying the Agip Main gate since Monday, accusing the oil company of failing to implement a Memorandum of Understanding it signed with them.

The unknown soldiers were said to have stormed the place at midnight Sunday, beating up old women and chased youths of the communities away.

The Leader of the protest and President, Obosi Youths, Pureheart Ekeukwu, claimed that the soldiers were hired by NAOC to intimidate the community.

According to the Leader, he said

The soldiers came to drive out the protesters from the facility around 12am. They came and started beating old men and women. They stripped old women naked and forced them into their vehicle.

“They picked people and went to drop them at Omoku-Obrikom road late that night. Three people were critically injured and they were taken to the hospital. Many others also sustained injuries.

“It is an act of irresponsibility for the military to strip old women naked. We are under panic now but we will not call off the protest. We will end this protest when they meet our demands.”

A source from Agip, who spoke in confidence, said the company lacked the powers to command soldiers and could not have sent troops after indigenes of their host communities.

He said Agip had done a lot to uplift the community insisting that the oil giant maintained the culture of holding their host communities in high esteem.
